Special Olympics Hockey Tournament:                     Photos (May take a while)

On Saturday, February 4th, St. Peter the Apostle Council members gathered at the Frederick County Sportsplex to volunteer their services for a Maryland State Floor Hockey Invitational Tournament.  The tournament included round robin game play and a skills contest.  The athletes gathered for an opening parade and the reciting of the pledge to our flag and the Olympic oath.  We joined volunteers from Frederick County JC's and representatives of the State, Park and Local police forces to stage this event.  There were teams from Frederick, Montgomery, Hartford, Prince Georges, Charles, Howard and Anne Arundel counties in Maryland as well as a Prince William County, Virginia team.  Our members ran the score table for divisions 2 and 3 games as well as the skill contests.  The score table included checking players in and out during play, noting the goals scored and manning the penalty booth.  We also aided in the set up and breakdown of the event.  The police were in charge of the awards.  Two members of Council 11975 joined us as well: a response due to a program presented at the Seton Chapter of Grand Knights.  All volunteers also received a special Olympics hockey shirt.

There is nothing like good timing!  Our Tootsie Roll checks arrived just in time for our Grand Knight, Harold Krcma to present a check to Jackie Smeller of the Frederick County Special Olympics.  The presentation was a surprise and done during a team meeting during the tournament.  What a great time wee had and an outstanding day for our Council and the Knights of Columbus!
